Harbour Brewing Co: Bringing the sunshine back to coastal beer

Craft beer has spent years getting louder, darker and more serious. Coastal lifestyle brands haven’t exactly gone the other way either. Somewhere along the line, life by the sea became muted, worthy and washed out. But anyone who’s actually spent time on the Cornish coast knows that’s not really what it feels like.

It’s bright. Energetic. Social. A little bit wild. And then there’s that bit afterwards when the boards are down, the swim is done, the bikes are parked up and everyone comes back together with a beer while the sun’s still hanging around. That was the feeling we wanted to bottle for Harbour Brewing Co.

Working with the Cornwall-based brewery, we set out to move Harbour beyond being a brand defined by one place and towards something more emotional: a brand built around the feeling of the coast, the reward after the action and the simple pleasure of good beer in good company.

The strategic idea became Sun-Soaked Playground.

Rather than representing one literal harbour, Harbour becomes a meeting point. After the surf, the swim, the hike or the ride. Wherever people gather to cool down, relax and stretch the fun a little longer.

“Harbour already had a brilliant spirit. We wanted to bottle that feeling,” says Sam Cutler, Creative Director at Thirst. “We kept coming back to those moments after the action – when the boards are down, the sun’s still out and everyone settles in for a beer. The identity needed to feel as relaxed and playful as that, while working incredibly hard as a brand. There’s a huge amount of craft behind every decision, but hopefully what people notice first isn’t the design but the feeling. The hardest thing to create is something that feels effortless.”

That feeling comes to life through a bold new identity centred around Harbour’s signature white H marque. Inspired by the structural forms and wayfinding of working harbours, it creates depth through light and shadow while acting as a strong masterbrand anchor across cans, taps, glassware, merchandise and brand experiences.

Around it sits a much brighter brand world. Sunshine yellows, clear-sky blues and deep ocean navy are paired with dynamic wave graphics, gold detailing and a bespoke illustration style created in collaboration with Con McHugh. The system draws on familiar coastal cues too like painted boats, buoys and beach huts but uses them in a way that feels contemporary and playful. Behind all that expression is a disciplined system designed to grow with the brand. Each beer has its own distinct character and colour palette, while the H marque, wave device and consistent architecture hold the range together. The result is stronger shelf impact now, with enough flexibility for future beers, collaborations, merchandise and experiences.

For Harbour, this wasn’t simply about making the brand look different.

“Thirst understood very quickly that this wasn’t just about making Harbour look different – it was about helping us grow,” says Eddie Lofthouse, Founder at Harbour Brewing Co. “They understood where Harbour was heading, not just where we’d been. What they’ve created feels unmistakably ours, while giving us far more room to evolve. From the packaging to the wider brand world, every element feels considered, commercially strong and true to who we are. The early response has been incredibly encouraging, and we’re excited to keep building on that momentum.”

And that early response has been strong. Three months after launch, Harbour reported sales up 45% year on year and 18% ahead of budget. The new identity is now live across packaging, merchandise, digital channels and branded experiences, giving Harbour a clearer point of difference in a crowded craft beer category and a stronger platform for growth beyond the South West.

Harbour already had the spirit. We just helped turn the sunshine up.
